VyprVPN Review
A comprehensive look at the VyprVPN service with tests and data between July and August 2020.
Introduction
Overview
VyprVPN is a good VPN considering the speeds, privacy, support, pricing, and reputation.
This review is based off reviewing VyprVPN between 5 September 2020 and 2 November 2020, including 25 bandwidth and download tests and 6 torrent tests of each protocol.
This review is updated every month with new data to keep the results current and consistent.
Is VyprVPN a good VPN? Is it worth getting?
Privacy & Anonymity Summary
VyprVPN is a no-log VPN, and its privacy policy seems to be better than most other VPNs. The company claims that no connection and usage data is collected.
Speed & Performance Summary
The WireGuard protocol provides a fast connection, while the OpenVPN is noticeably slower. The torrenting speeds on both the IKEv2 and WireGuard protocols are average.
Functionality & Application Summary
The VPN clients are well-built, intuitive, and have the same consistent interface design amongst all clients. All settings are easily accessible and even non-technical people will find it easy to use.
Reputation & Support Summary
VyprVPN and their parent company Golden Frog have a good reputation. There have been no data leaks or privacy concerns. However, their marketing tactics are a little bit aggressive.
The customer support is very responsive and helpful. They have a 24x7 live chat support, and I’ve even got a reply within 20 seconds of contacting them.
Price & Value Summary
At a price of $12.95/month, there are better VPNs. But a 2-year subscription costs only $60, and the service is well worth the money at that price point.
Proof
Some VPN review sites just regurgitate information from other sites. I actually buy them and test them out. Here’s a screenshot of my current VyprVPN plan.

Yes.
Does VyprVPN pass the WebRTC Test?
Yes.
Does VyprVPN pass the DNS Leak Test?
Yes.
Does VyprVPN have a logging policy?
Currently, VyprVPN is a no-log VPN service. They used to log certain data of users and hold it for 30 days. This included details regarding the original IP address, assigned IP address, connection start and end times, the total number of bytes used, etc.
On 29th November 2018, the CEO of their parent company, Mr. Sunday Yokubaitis announced that VyprVPN will not be tracking or keeping logs anymore. In the blog post, the CEO said:
“As our service has matured over the past decade, we have become more experienced with running a global VPN network and the necessity for minimal logging has diminished. We have found better ways to improve performance and defeat fraudsters without needing a user’s connection information.”
Does VyprVPN have a kill switch?
Yes, the Windows, Mac, and Android clients all have a system kill switch.
What security protocols does VyprVPN use?
VyprVPN supports the latest protocol WireGuard, as well as IKEv2, OpenVPN, and Chameleon, a protocol designed by VyprVPN to defeat aggressive censorship and VPN blocking in countries like China, Russia, and Saudi Arabia.
Speed & Performance
Is VyprVPN fast?
The speeds depend on the protocol used. WireGuard was fast, IKEv2 was dependable, but the OpenVPN protocol could be quite slow.
Does VyprVPN provide consistent speeds?
In my experience, VyprVPN provides fairly consistent speeds.
See how VyprVPN performed against the other top VPNs in the speed tests.
Network Bandwidth Tests
VyprVPN was 28.25% slower than my connection without a VPN, which is excellent.
No VPN Network Bandwidth Speed Tests
As a benchmark I did 25 tests through speedtest.net and openspeedtest.com with no VPN connected. Here are the average results.
WireGuard Network Bandwidth Speed Tests
Here are the results of 25 tests with VyprVPN' WireGuard protocol.
IKEv2 Network Bandwidth Speed Tests
Here are the IKEv2 protocol results from 25 speed tests.
I would often have problems connecting to the speedtest.net servers using Private Internet Access' OpenVPN TCP protocol, so this protocol was not used in the speed tests.
File Download Tests
VyprVPN download speed was between 64.08% and 27.82% slower downloading a 100mb file than my connection without a VPN, which is fairly average.
The average time to download the file was considerably slower: between 267.26% and 45.52% slower.
For the file download tests I downloaded a 100MB file from a private AWS S3 server, again this test was run 25 times.
Torrent Download Test Results
VyprVPN torrenting speeds were on average between 42.84% and 46.18% slower than my connection without a VPN. These speeds were above average to good.
IKEv2 was better at downloading torrents than the WireGuard protocol.
To test P2P torrenting speeds I chose to download 3 .torrent files using my torrent client qBittorent.
- A small torrent: downloading the art application 'GIMP' at 163.4MB.
- A medium torrent: downloading the 4K version of the animated film 'Big Buck Bunny' at 642MB.
- A large torrent: downloading the operating system 'Ubuntu 20' at 2.52GB.
Functionality & Application
Is VyprVPN easy to use?
The app is simplistic, easy to use, and intuitive. All the settings like location, protocols, kill switch, etc. were easy to find and configure. Older people and those who are not used to technology will find it easy to use.
Windows and Android clients look exactly the same. The installation on windows took a little more time since there were many checkboxes, like license agreements, shortcut locations, etc. Also, connecting and disconnecting from servers was taking more time than usual.
Windows, Mac, and Android clients look exactly the same. The installation on windows took a little more time since there were many checkboxes, like license agreements, shortcut locations, etc. Also, connecting and disconnecting from servers takes longer than some other VPNs.
Does VyprVPN support split tunneling?

Is VyprVPN good for BBC iPlayer?
Yes, I was able to easily connect to the iPlayer service and watch live TV and prerecorded video on demand content from the BBC library.

- Excellent customer support.
- Smooth, easy to use apps.
- Supports WireGuard.

Yes, they do have 24x7 customer support.
I contacted the live chat support with a couple of questions, and the response was very fast. The first reply came in less than 20 seconds.

VyprVPN and their parent company are based in Switzerland.
Who is the parent company?
VyprVPN is a sub-brand of Golden Frog GmbH. Their office is located at Obergrubenweg 8 Meggen, 6045 Switzerland.
Have VyprVPN or their parent company been involved in any controversies or scandals?
Golden Frog GmbH and VyprVPN have maintained a good reputation all these years. There are no controversies or scandals on their account until now.
However, their marketing tactics have been widely criticized. Their website has a countdown timer which says a discount of 81% is there for 18 hours and 8 minutes. But the countdown timer restarts every time we refresh the page.

Price & Value
How much does VyprVPN cost per month?
VyprVPN offers 3 different subscriptions, a monthly subscription costing $12.95/month, a yearly subscription costing $45 at $3.75/mo, and a 2-year subscription costing $60 at $2.50/mo.
Is VyprVPN worth the money?
The per month subscription is expensive and there are better VPNs at that price point. A 2-year subscription costs $60, it is cheaper than most VPNs and the service is worth the money at that price for someone who does not care about the protocol. Their speeds depend largely on the protocol used, so if you switch between different protocols, VyprVPN may not be a good option.
Other than this issue, VyprVPN is great in terms of customer support, privacy, anonymity, and ease of use.
What payment forms do they accept?
VyprVPN accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express credit cards, and payment gateways like PayPal and UnionPay. They do not accept cryptocurrencies or any anonymous payment methods.
Do they have a trial or a money-back guarantee? What is their refund policy?
They offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, but some Reddit users have reported that they didn’t get a refund even after waiting for months. Also, the refund is not applicable for accounts purchased with iTunes or Google Play.
Conclusion
Who is VyprVPN good for?
VyprVPN is good for all those who are looking for a secure, no-log VPN. Being a Switzerland based company, VyprVPN has an advantage over US-based VPNs in case of privacy and anonymity. People from China and other countries with strong censorship will like it since it works pretty well in those countries.
VyprVPN is also good for older people and for those who are not used to technology.
Who is it not suitable for?
VyprVPN is not a good choice for those who want to download torrents since the speeds are below average. Also, if you want to use OpenVPN, VyprVPN will be a bad choice as the speeds are very slow for this protocol.
