PureVPN vs Torguard
A side by side comparison of PureVPN or Torguard... Which one wins?
Recommendation
According to my professional opinion, TorGuard is better than PureVPN; performing better in terms of privacy, speed, torrenting, and reputation.
This comparison between PureVPN and TorGuard includes test data that was undertaken between 3 September and 4 November 2020.
How is PureVPN better than TorGuard?
PureVPN is better for streaming. It unblocks Netflix in France, UK, and the US, as well as pre-recorded BBC iPlayer content. TorGuard isn’t very reliable for for unblocking geo-restricted content. Also, TorGuard’s customer support is slow, whereas PureVPN offers fast and responsive live chat support.
How is TorGuard better than PureVPN?
TorGuard offers significantly better speeds, has a better logging policy, offers a good torrenting experience, and has a better reputation than PureVPN.
Privacy & Anonymity
Which one offers better privacy?
While both do not collect browsing logs, they both collect some non-identifiable information to run their services.
TorGuard offers better privacy since they only collect connection logs, which are necessary to run their service.
PureVPN collects information such as connection date, length, number of simultaneous connections, VPN location, and the internet service provider.
Speed & Performance
Which one is faster?
In our speed tests, TorGuard was much faster than PureVPN; the OpenVPN and OpenConnect protocols provide much quicker speeds than PureVPN’s IPsec and OpenVPN protocols. I had trouble maintaining a consistent connection using PureVPN’s UDP protocol on Mac.
Which one is better for downloading torrents?
TorGuard is better for downloading torrents. The speeds provided by TorGuard’s OpenVPN and OpenConnect protocols were noticeably better than PureVPN’s IPsec protocol. PureVPN’s OpenVPN TCP protocol was (understandably) slower.
Functionality & Application
Which is better for geo-unblocking Netflix?
We tested both TorGuard and PureVPN to see if they would unblock Netflix in fifteen countries. PureVPN unblocked Netflix France, UK, and the US while TorGuard wasn’t able to unblock Netflix in any country.
PureVPN is the much better option for streaming, with designated streaming servers.
Which one has better features?
PureVPN allows ten simultaneous connections, while TorGuard allows only eight. PureVPN has a slight edge in case of the protocols offered, but TorGuard’s clients are more customizable for people looking to tinker their VPN’s settings.
PureVPN has one of the most seamless onboarding experiences for new users out of all of the VPN’s I’ve reviewed.
Reputation & Support
Which one offers better support?
PureVPN offers fast and responsive live chat support. TorGuard doesn’t offer live chat support, and their customer support is often delayed.
Which one is more trustworthy?
TorGuard is regarded as more trustworthy than PureVPN.
In 2017, PureVPN gave away ‘non-existent’, ‘non-identifiable’ logs to the FBI when requested, which resulted in a man getting arrested.
TorGuard underwent a server breach in 2017, but they claim that the VPN traffic was not compromised since they were practicing secure PKI management. Apart from this incident, there have been no controversies, scandals, or server breaches involving TorGuard.
Price & Value
Which offers better value for money?
Considering the speeds, logging policy, pricing, and reputation, TorGuard offers better value for money. Their one-year plan costs $29.98 with a 50% discount that’s been running for a while and $59.99 without the discount. PureVPN’s one-year plan costs $77.88.
